More volunteer dates: Tampa Bay Watch Calendar

We need 20 - 40 volunteers each day and would appreciate your assistance in spreading the word among your work place, clubs, groups -- anyone who may be interested in joining the project as a team building exercise. We'll also gladly take individual volunteers. Please contact me to sign up for an event. (See below.)

Volunteers transporting oyster shells for use in construction of new, live oyster bars in Tampa Bay in 2002.
This year's 4 day project at Ft De Soto Park has been designed to protect several mangrove stands along the seawall at the campground. We will construct the oyster bars by bagging fossilized shell and placing the bags in the water to form a naturally shaped oyster bar/reef. The shell gives the oysters a hard substance to settle and grow on. We like to build the habitat in the winter months because when the water temperature reaches 68-70 degrees the oysters release their spat (larvae) into the water. These millions of oyster babies float around the bay looking for a new home - something we can make for them!

The oyster bars are constructed by bagging fossilized shell and placing the bags in the water to form a naturally shaped oyster bar/reef.

Oyster bars break up wave energy and cause sediment to build up behind the bars. This helps stabilize the shoreline and prevent erosion. We've had a lot of success protecting coastal vegetation (including mangroves) by building the bars slightly offshore and following the natural contours of the coastline.

Besides erosion control, oysters also improve water quality by filtering sediment and nutrients out of the water, up to 10 gallons per oyster per hour! Their discarded nutrients fertilize sea grass beds making them healthier as well. Oyster bars also provide shelter for small marine creatures and attract birds interested in a tasty dinner.

If you or your group would like to join us on any of the above dates please e-mail me or call today to sign up!
